Painting or Staining a Fence – What’s the Best Way to Go?

Your fence is an important feature of your home; it provides privacy, security, and if done right, aesthetic appeal. But the ever-changing weather conditions may leave your once-pretty fence looking rather drab, and no one wants that.

Once you’ve installed a fence on your property, it demands routine maintenance. Failure to do can leave your yard looking like it’s all set for Halloween – when it isn’t even October yet! But with proper care and regular upkeep, your fence will be good to go for years.

Topping up your wooden fence will help you prevent it from getting damaged by the elements, and from insects and rotting. There are two methods for preserving a fence: staining and painting. But before you put on your DIY overalls and start your fence repair project, look at the pros and cons of both before proceeding with either one.

Paint

Painting your fence will give it a solid look that will provide both a protective layer, and curb appeal. The biggest advantage of painting a fence is the sheer variety in colors. You can go with any! Thinking of matching the color of your fence to the purple wisterias blooming in your garden? No problem, paint has got you covered.

You can easily breathe new life into your garden’s landscape by coloring your fences unexpected bold hues. You can even match it to the color scheme of your house.

But paint also has its disadvantages. Being a little on the expensive side, painting a fence requires primer and more coats, meaning more paint, to achieve a solid, uniform color. Paint is also prone to cracking, chipping, and peeling which doesn’t make it very long-lasting.

But paint does take lesser time to set and can be thoroughly dried in four to eight hours.

Stain

Stain is comparably thinner composition wise as compared to paint. Instead of layering on top of the wood, stain changes the color of a wooden fence by soaking in it. It also doesn’t require primer prior to being applied. If you have a rough-hewn or textured wooden fence, a stain will beautifully show off the underlying pattern. It aids in enhancing the natural, raw beauty of the wooden fence rather than hiding it with a topcoat.

Stains also doesn’t crack, peel, or blister like paint does. You’ll only need one coat of stain to make its mark on the fence.

But unlike paint, stains do not offer a lot of variety so you’ll be stuck with mostly browns. Also, it will take longer time to dry, taking almost two days to set properly.

With these in mind, instead of doing the painting and staining yourself, hire a professional fencing company to do the hard work instead.
